Happy Friday Ladies and Gentlemen and I hope you’re ready for another exciting night here in the Permian Basin! I’m talking of course about the big playoff matchup at Ratliff Stadium in Odessa tonight where the Permian Panthers will take on the Sam Houston Texans. Kickoff is at 7pm and I’m sure everyone in town is going to be there. While I’m no football savant, I think the Panthers will pull off the round one win and go on marching on forward in the playoffs 27-24! Make sure you go out and show your support for all the hard work the coaches and players have put in this season.

Thoughts From A Monday Morning Quarterback

Yesterday was an exciting day of Football across the NFL. Included in those games was the Dallas Cowboys traveling to Seattle and beating the defending Super Bowl champions to improve to 5-1 on the year! This is the first time since 1996 that the Cowboys have started 5-1 and they have high hopes of making a serious run this year. This is some tough competition in the NFC East despite Washington having a down year so far. The Philadelphia Eagles shutout the Giants last night to also improve to 5-1 this season. It’s going to be very interesting when the Eagles and Cowboys square off for the first time in Dallas on Thanksgiving, and it could go a long way to determine who wins the division! The only 5-1 team in the AFC is way out west in San Diego, where they beat a scrappy Raiders team 31-28.

Week five of the NFL season turned out to be quite an exciting one with nine of the thirteen games on Sunday decided by a touchdown or less! This included two overtime games, one of which featured the Dallas Cowboys knocking off a strong Houston squad 20-17. The other game to extend past the regulation of sixty minutes was New Orleans vs. Tampa Bay. The Bucs were up by eleven in the fourth quarter and looked like they may pull off the upset but Drew Brees and the Saints stormed back to take it in overtime 37-31. The first shutout of the season occurred in San Diego where the Chargers destroyed the Jets 31-0. New York has a long list of problems on offense and it will be interesting to see how they attempt to turn their sinking ship around!

The Permian Panthers football team is off this week as they rest up and prepare to face Midland Lee at Grande Stadium on October 10th. Due to outside conditions beyond our control, this has been one crazy morning so far! If you drive by the Thrifty Nickel office on Golder right now, you’ll see some important wires hanging from the side of the building where they shouldn’t be! Due to this we don’t have any operational phone lines or electricity at 2611 Golder Avenue right now. So if you still need to place your ads for this Thursday’s paper, fear not! Just call 432-333-4184 or 432-580-7777 and leave us a voicemail. We’ll enter your ads into our system as soon as we have access to them. Of course you can always place your ads online 24 hours a day at https://ourthriftynickel.com by clicking the ‘Place An Ad’ tab. Hopefully the wonderful city utility companies here in Odessa get us back online soon!
