Thrifty Nickel secure from Heartbleed

Heartbleed is the nickname for an internet security bug that began receiving public attention last week. The details are pretty involved, but in a nutshell there was a potential vulnerability found in OpenSSL encryption, which is currently used by about two-thirds of all sites on the internet.

The bug is serious business. Fortunately, our tech team (left) is serious about security, too. Our systems were patched and upgraded to new certificates before even the giant corporate sites had a chance to react.

We’re also proud to be one of the growing number of secure sites utilizing something known as “perfect forward secrecy” — a way of preventing unforeseen future vulnerabilities from decrypting past transactions. You’ll hear more about it in the future as more and more sites step up to the plate to protect their customers.

Many of you have probably been seeing the stories pop up all over the web about the new Heartbleed virus. This bug can capture your data such as usernames and passwords due to sites that use OpenSSL certificates. According to CNET “Do not log into accounts from afflicted sites until you’re sure the company has patched the problem. If the company hasn’t been forthcoming — confirming a fix or keeping you up to date with progress — reach out to its customer service teams for information, said John Miller, security research manager for TrustWave, a security and compliance firm.” Well we’re happy to say that this Thrifty Nickel blog and our main website are free from concern. One of the smart techie guys who does all our boring computer stuff behind the scenes was preparing to defend against this bug well before it ever hit the mainstream news outlets.
